***BETTER LATER THAN NEVER*** (Due to the pandemic I had some free time to finish this and some other projects of mine. )
**V2 Version of the classical Death & Rebirth movie with exclusive 5.1 audio**
There isn't any other version for this in HD around aside from my older messy V1 which is now obsolete. (Erai Raw mislabeled NETFLIX's Death True ^2 as Death & Rebirth.)
This is just a recap + preview movie of the End of Evangelion. If you don't know what this is you should probably skip it directly to the End of Evangelion. This is a torrent for Eva Fans and collectors and was part of the 2015 blu ray release using it directly as a raw.
This release include an unique special 5.1 audio track composed from the Death true V2 that I edited myself. Death original audio has a pretty bad voice mixing making difficult to hear some lines.
Subs languages are:
English
Portuguese (by me)
Chinese
French
Russian
Chinese.
All synced by me. (With help by Sergey, Proyect NERV and Boday for the Russian, Chinese and Spanish subs).
All except Russian have Frame-Accurate typesetting for all signs and text.
*FAQ:*
**What is the deal with Death & Rebirth?**
it is not entirely clear what the correct order of events lead to the unconventional ending of the original series back in march 1996 when episodes 25 and 26 aired. What is known, is that the later movie "The End of Evangelion", which is a direct sequel and ending to the series, was the originally conceptualized ending of the series.
The "experimental tone" of the first ending of the series is reported to be an alternative ending due to lack of budget and time. Due to the success of the series, however, the creators got approval for the creation of a Theatrical film for concluding the series.
However, once again, time constraints impeded the completion of the film in time so in march 1997, the first Eva movie "Death & Rebirth" was released. An incomplete "preview" film consisting of two parts:
Death which is a recap and had no direct involvement by Anno. (The main creator of the series) and Rebirth which was the incomplete first 24 minutes of what later became the actual movie that Ended the series "The End of Evangelion" Released 5 months later.
During the premier of D&R, producers filmed the Theater shots and some letters that were later used in the Live Action sequence of the End of Evangelion
**Why is there more than one version of Death?**
Death is a 72 minute long recap of the first 24 episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Series, directed by Masayuki, in the format of a string quartet, each focusing on one of four characters: Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu. At the time of its release in theaters with Rebirth on March 15th, 1997, it featured extra footage that had never been seen that was later released as extra footage for episodes 21'-24' (also reworked animation for Episode 04).
There was a second version personally edited by Masayuki that aired, without Rebirth, after the release of episodes 21'-24' that had much of the extra footage removed, this was called Death(true), aired January 2nd, 1998, on WoWoW (Japanese Satellite TV). It had to be cut down to fit in the television timing format.
Later, a second edit was made called Death(true) 2 which was part of the final version of the movies in what was later called "Revival of Evangelion" a theatrical re-release of the movies on March 7th, 1998. This is also the version used in the home video releases and most of the DVD releases in the west.
Rebirth is the first 24 minutres of the first part of End of Evangelion, as the movie was note completed in time for the premier. It is missing some effects, reuses most of the music and SFX for the original series that were later improved for the End of Evangelion movie. It is considered a "beta preview" and an obsolete movie, however it does have some unique shots and cell animations not present anywhere else.
**How about the other releases out there?**
One of the reasons that I decided to make this release, even this late, is the fact that no one else did it. Even NETFLIX didn't license Death & Rebirth, and Erai-raws mislabeled the Death true 2 wrongly as Death and Rebirth. So this is the only choice you have for completing your classic Eva collection in high definition. There are many bootleg and releases out there, specially in Europe, claiming to be Death & Rebirth that were actually just a frankenstein cut of Death True 2 (From Revival of Evangelion) whith an amateur trimmed version of EoE with a poor edit of the end theme song replacing the Thanatos theme song of End of Evangelion
interesting fact is that this scan is actually considerably sharper than the End of Evangelion telecine, having a little bit more detail and grain preserved. However, the blacks are crushed on this scan so it is not perfect. Death true (2) is remarkably much softer than Death, for this reason and the missing Asuka scenes, I prefer the original Death myself.
**What is different on this V2 file?**
I've released the entire classic series of Eva, as well as The End of Evangelion Movie, remastered versions of eps 21-24 as well as episode 16 and several other stuff Eva-Related since the release of the Blu ray in 2015.
First releases where kinda rushed and I ended up doing a proper polished v2 version with several standardized subs of everything I released, excluding Death & Rebirth, until now. This was a low priority project for me, but due to the Pandemics, I got the free time to finish it up.
The previous version had wrong encode settings for the Rebirth file, poorly synced subs and only English subtitles. This version has a much better encode optimized for grain preservation (no DNR in this one), using the same settings for the EoE release, much better subs based on the EoE lines and timing, frame-accurate basic Typesetting and additional languages. Although as I was reviewing the French and Spanish subs, I didn't like its translation. I recommend sticking to English and Portuguese if you can.
**What is the Special audio Track?**
The main feature of this release is in fact the 5.1 audio. One of the worst things about Death is the audio mix. It has clipping distorted sound, and poor voice mixing. Some background lines were so quiet that my Chinese sub revisor DELETED background lines important to the film because he simply didn't listen to them! I Had to manually re-add those lines.
The Death True (2) version had the audio remastered to 5.1 with the rest of the series back in 2003 while retaining the original sync and unique voice acting for the movie. However, due to the 2 removed scenes, I had to resync the audio to make it sync properly with the original Death audio. For the missing scenes, I just upmixed the original death track with an industry-level VST and added surround channels with the original OST used on the scenes for the rear channels. I had PwHodges, which is a professional audio editor QC the mix for me back in UK.
