Hello again! Here I have the first episode of Diamond & Pearl, fully subtitled and with English audio synced. Video: DVD Remux (Untouched) Audio: 1. Japanese (R2J DVD), 2. English (R1US Box Set DVD) Subtitles: English Subs + Songs & Signs track + undubbed sequences (Great Encyclopedia and NEP) So I know that this episode has already been subbed in the past but I really love the DP games and anime so I decided to give it a shot anyways. I plan on subbing more DP eps in the future as well. For the video I had access to the raw discs, and because I value quality over everything else I did not encode it. As a result we have a DVD Remux that looks pretty good, aside from some VFR and CGI shots that are interlaced on the DVD that I don't know how to properly encode (yadif on ffmpeg is not gonna cut it here). If I were to encode it I would want to deinterlace losslessly in Avisynth and later re-encode to remux size, but I don't know how to use Avisynth so that's kind of out of the question. The good news is, player deinterlacers like mpv work pretty well for both DP and AG's DVDs so it's not a complete disaster, and most of the shots on this episode were animated normally and are free of interlacing. The audio is untouched from the Japanese DVD as well. The English dub from the R1US Box Set DVDs (chosen due to their higher bitrate over the Complete Collection) synced without issue, just needing to be readjusted after the eyecatch. Anything that was not dubbed like the Professor Oak and NEP segments were kept Japanese in the dub track, with the Songs & Signs track keeping these portions subbed as well. This is an all new translation by me, and as usual, I chose to use English Pokemon, move, and item names while retaining human and location names in Japanese. I was wondering if I should do a separate sub track with all Japanese namings, but I was too lazy so I didn't do it for this episode. Maybe I'll do it for later ones so you can choose based on preference and so everyone will be satisfied. Also didn't add a sub track for dubtitles this time. Figure it's not really necessary. Big thanks to Wicked for the materials used for this release, as well as GP119 for QC'ing my subs and finding some mistakes.

Thanks!! Do you happen to have DP ep 48? I think it's the only ep that hasn't been subbed by anyone at all, yet.
@grawl What about Episode 2-93 as a whole?

I was under the assumption that almost nothing in the SD portion was subbed after like ep 8 or so. But if 48 really is the only one then I can definitely take a crack at it.
@dubudavid Most of them have dubtitles, so if you count them, 48 is the only one left.

I see. To be fair, the dub is surprisingly accurate to the Japanese script. I can definitely do 48 if there's demand for it!
Looking forward to see the rest of DP, i think PM didn't sub ep 5 to 67. But for the love of God, please use Pokemon japanese names. Thank you very much :)
He'll maybe consider having 2 subtitles. One with all the Japanese names/terms, one with the English names/terms.

Yeah, I understand a lot of people would prefer that, so from now on I'll include two sub tracks. This was more like a test to get feedback so when I continue that will be how I'll operate. Later on I'll go back to this one and make a sub track with JP names too.
Don't use up your limited time subbing DP48. It's a clip show and not a proper ep, so a total waste of time. If there is one episode that you should subtitle that haven't been subtitled yet (no, the dubtitles are atrocious and do not count) it's DP40 (Champion Shirona Appears). Incredibly important episode (from a dialogue perspective) that sets up plot for the rest of the series. So if anything, have a crack at that one instead (I've been longing for this particular episode to be subbed for years...). As for localization, it's best to do it the same way PM did - english move names, and the rest in japanese. It's the best of both worlds and least confusing imho, but you obv. do as you want. As for the other episodes yet not subbed, it's basically DP11-DP093 with the following exceptions: DP20, DP53, DP66-72, DP75, DP84-85, DP87-91 (so, these are all subbed already by PM & DATS). So if I were you, subbing plot important episodes that fit in here and are yet not subbed would be my go-to method.

I think this is a good method as well. I've spoken to some people who may have Japanese closed captions for the series or know where to get them, and they would be so so helpful for me when TL'ing. I translated TOS 117 completely by ear and it took five full days, whereas with the CCs I got from kitsuneko for ep 1 of DP, it only took me two days. So I'd appreciate if someone could lead me in the right direction there, at least for episodes that are important plot-wise and have not been properly subbed/translated and would be in high demand.
CCs for the DP SD episodes are a tough one. I only know of that one on Kitsunekko. Anyone else who can help here?
What's on Kitsunekko is all that exists. The various episodes (pre-120) were all taken from re-airings (mostly Pokémon Sunday & Smash). Sunday actually aired a lot of early DP in order, but a lot of Sunday wasn't capped or the PID for the caption track was stripped from the TS file. TS exists for 96-191 for the original TV Tokyo airings but most files are actually lost. Same goes for most BS-Japan airings. So what's out there is all that exists (unless someone can take a time machine back to 2008 and recover the TS files).

Well, I guess I'll have to go by ear for a lot of these eps sadly. Meowth is always a pain in the butt without captions... Thanks though guys!
If the last sub dump was actually all dubtitles, then it looks like most of the series would need to be re-done. 48, although a clip show, would be more for completionist' sake, so there isn't an episode gap missing. PM used to sub clip show specials all the time, and I actually miss that. I get that some don't like these eps, but I would hate having a missing spot between eps 47 and 49, and I do watch every episode to completion. I am hoping that one day all of Pokemon will get subbed (even the un-important clip shows), so I DO appreciate any work that does get done, since fansubbing is very rare to see nowadays on here.
I'm pretty sure even the person who shared all those dubtitled episodes acknowledged that they were far from ideal, but basically figured "Well if it's either dubtitles or NOTHING, then dubtitles are preferrable." I think we can all agree that a proper translation straight from Japanese at some point would be vastly preferrable. That said, assuming the writing for the dub was more or less the same back then as it is now, the dub CAN actually be used as a reference at least, since on the whole it tends to be fairly literal... except for Team Rocket who are rewritten to hell and back.
Glad to see someone else taking a stab at DP. Like waylan4 said, I'd recommend prioritizing episodes 11-19, 21-66, 73-74, 76-83, 86, and 92-93. Those are the episodes we only have dubtitles for, so getting a proper translation of them would be great. Having all of DP subbed by one person/team would be a dream come true but I feel like it's best to worry about that after the unsubbed gaps have been filled.
@dubudavid dunno if you are dead but here are CC's of the entirety of DP, AG, and OS. https://mega.nz/folder/7ANiXS5R#2WEy_c9QF3k_sTxPjs4tJA
