## This is basically obsolete as the [French release](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1330613) has better picture quality. I strongly advice you download that instead of this. I'll keep this up for archival purposes and the comments Video: USBD Remux 1920x1080p 24.000fps Audio: Japanese 1.0 FLAC Subtitles: 1. English - [RH] (default)|2. Wonderful, thanks.
>The picture quality on the BD seems mostly fine but I’m guessing it has the same encoding problem as **[this](https://twitter.com/NLScavenger/status/1284039096831180803)** because the quality seems to noticeably vary between frames (please correct me if I’m wrong). Hi, I'm person who tweeted that lol. Got the identical UK release recently and it indeed suffers from *I-frame pulsing* (for those unfamiliar with this issue, see [Kentai's explanation in his review of the crappy 2016 Italian Dawn of the Dead BD/UHD](http://www.kentaiblog.com/2016/12/no-more-room-in-case-dawn-of-dead-4k.html?zx=7b1adf74499646ae)). You can check for this problem in VirtualDub2, which shows if a frame is a I/K-frame, P-frame and B-frame. In this BD, the P-frames and B-frames look noticeably worse, but P-frames are not as badly affected as the B-frames. >If it is indeed the case there’s nothing you can really do about it until a better version gets released. Doesn’t look bad in motion though so not a huge deal. Yeah, I agree, it's not so bad in motion, although I was not happy about it at first lol. It's unfortunate that they have invested so much effort into the restoration, only to have their work undermined by the compression. I'm curious about the French Eurozoom release, but it seems to be OOP and very expensive. Their encoder apparently did a good job with Promare, Violet Evergarden - Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, and Liz and the Blue Bird (Liz uses theatrical version like all international releases unfortunately)
French Eurozoom BD has German subs according to the [DVDClassik review](https://www.dvdclassik.com/test/blu-ray-belladonna-eurozoom-prestige) (also has lossy jpeg screenshots), so it's probably identical to German Rapid Eye Movies release. FR BD seems to be slightly brighter and framing is a bit different too, shows more on the sides. iirc Rapid Eye Movies releases tend to be a bit brighter. Thank you scav for the confirmation on the encoding problem and your observations. It is indeed bit of a shame what happened with this release. I read that the scan they used is 4K so maybe an UHD release with none of the funky encoding one day in the future? One can hope... I've never come across the French BD on my search so I guess this is the best release actually available. I found your twitter sometime last year, awesome and very informative stuff you got there so thank you for your great posts. Also thanks for telling about VirtualDub2, totally getting it now :D
@hydes You're welcome. Yeah, it was advertised as a 4K restoration. Anime Limited UK seems to have some interest in UHD, so hopefully they'll revisit this film someday. I use VirtualDub2 a lot for quick video shitposts, but I also find it very useful as a reference when syncing audio/subtitle tracks from other sources because it shows time and frame number. Makes it easy to calculate timing difference, or to find the points where timing starts to deviate. VirtualDub2 does have a few quirks, for example the chroma is messed up with interlaced video, but you can avoid that problem by converting the color to yv16 via avisynth script. You also need to make sure colorspace is decoded correctly because it doesn't automatically use the correct colorspace.

@scav Great tips! I'll jot 'em down for future use. I kinda just took your tweet and used it here so I wanted to ask if you're ok with me referencing/linking your tweets where applicable for future uploads of mine? They're a great & quick source of info. I'd be sure to credit you ofc.
if anyone cares, i could share a remux of the french release

hydes (uploader)

User
@pip3 Sure. How do you wanna go about it? Just upload here maybe? Might be easiest.
I'd also like to check the FR BD. @hydes I don't mind, but keep in mind that even I get things wrong sometimes lol

hydes (uploader)

User
@scav ofc :D I shall tread carefully
you don't wanna deal with my upload speed, so: https://0bin.net/paste/Tkf6Phe1#tb1eFHV3WUCQGG47h0QXMRRzq7n-PoCmtWFqT0/26AC
@pip3 Thanks!

@pip3 thank you
I've only skimmed quickly through the FR BD remux, but wow. The film grain texture looks good. Way better than the artifacty, blotchy grain texture of the US BD.

[The bitrate on the FR BD](https://i.imgur.com/2Na9t3d.png) seems to vary more than on the US BD. It's especially noticeable during ["low intensity" scenes](https://slow.pics/c/2pxWOcmx) where the screen is mostly one color. Is this some kind of an adaptive bitrate that's being used? Though I guess the better encoding makes up for it on the overall film. Might just need to upload a new post with the FR BD.
You could splice the USBD for said scenes.
@hydes unless you are intent on splicing it with the usbd and you are only gonna reupload it straight, make sure to use the original description, you know, for etiquette's sake >(GENERAL) >Container…….: Matroska >Size…………: 15.08 GiB >Duration……..: 01:26:20 (h:m:s) >Source(s)…….: FRA 1080p Blu-ray AVC LPCM 2.0 – VXS (thanks!) >USA 1080p Blu-ray AVC LPCM 2.0 – NoGroup (thanks!) >Chapters……..: Yes (Named) >Compression…..: no zlib, no header stripping >Release date….: 03/07/2020 > >(VIDEO) >Codec………..: AVC >Type…………: Progressive >Resolution……: 1920×1080 >Bit rate……..: 24.5 Mb/s >Frame rate……: 24.000 FPS > >(AUDIO) >Format……….: FLAC >Channels……..: 2.0 >Bit depth…….: 24 bits >Sample rate…..: 48.0 kHz >Bit rate……..: 584 kb/s >Language……..: Japanese > >(SUBTITLES) >Format……….: PGS (original) >Language(s)…..: English, French, German
@hydes Yeah, it's an adaptive bitrate. I just noticed that the FRBD grain looks monochromatic whereas the USBD grain has some color. The chroma/grain might have been processed like the [German UHD release of Crying Freeman](https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=17798842&postcount=41), but I think it's a minor inconvenience compared to the compression issues of US BD.
>I just noticed that the FRBD grain looks monochromatic whereas the USBD grain has some color. The chroma/grain might have been processed like the German UHD release of Crying Freeman, but I think it’s a minor inconvenience compared to the compression issues of US BD. I checked in GIMP and chroma in FR BD seems to be filtered. @scav Thanks for the info. I'll link your findings in the new upload. @pip3 Yeah I'll just reupload the remux without tinkering. It might be even more jarring than the bitrate starvation if the aspect ratio changes because of the different framing whenever there's one of those low intensity scenes . I'll definitely add that original description, thanks.
nice 1.0 audio
