Encode Comparison

Notes:

This is the re-edited film version of the OVA (available here), containing revised narration by the main character along with several new animated segments which makes for a complementary pairing on viewing.
The film print (or at least this transfer of it) also exhibits a noticeably darker color palette.

Sourced from the old CPM 2-Disc Set, the movie footage is atrocious as mentioned in the comments of DarkDream’s release of the OVA edition, containing severe frame-blending that’s nearly impossible to do anything with. Significant ringing, errant aliasing, and dotcrawl were both reduced and removed respectively. A stronger adaptive grain matching was applied, targetting the dark & midtone regions to ameliorate macroblocking and minor banding in the source without harming shadow detail. Finally, chroma noise was eliminated along with some residual rainbowing.

OCR’d subtitles were taken from SSP-Corp’s release and QC’d by me manually retiming them to fix scene bleeds, correcting typos and inaccurate lines, aligning historical terms with their modern spellings, as well as restoring Japanese name ordering and honorifics. Signs were hardsubbed in the movie source. The Original unmodified DVD sub track is included for those that might prefer them.

If this is your first viewing of this series, or a rewatch after a long time I have documented the differences/new inserted content in the film over the OVA version,
along with a suggested viewing order for completion’s sake:
Before OVA EP01 Chapter 1 → New Movie Intro until ~ 0:41
After OVA EP01 Chapter 1 → New Movie Scene @ 8:57 ~ 9:37
After OVA EP01 Chapter 3 → New Movie Scene @ 17:14 ~ 17:50
After OVA EP01 @ 36:23 → Movie Character Monologue @ 26:20 ~ 26:50
After OVA EP02 @ 05:00 → Alternative Character Narration @ 30:12 ~ 30:25
After OVA EP02 @ 10:27 → Alternative Movie Scene @ 34:22 ~ 34:51
After OVA EP02 Chapter 3 → New Movie Scene @ 40:01 ~ 41:18
After OVA EP02 Chapter 5 → Movie Character Monologue & Narration @ 51:57 ~ 53:40
After OVA EP03 → Movie Character Monologue @ 01:24:03 ~ 01:25:00

Additionally, if you somewhat understand Japanese, there is also a vocal drama in track #10 of the 2nd OST that takes place after the anime which serves as an epilogue.
A summary of which follows: Ayame meets a strange old man on a mountain path and gets invited to drink saké with him. After a few cups of saké, the conversation between the two takes a strange turn as the old man discloses his knowledge of the Legend of the Swords of Sorcery and what took place between the Shadow Warriors and Mori Ranmaru. Suddenly, the old man reveals his true intention and tries to kill the startled Ayame; however, using the power of her magical weapon, Ayame manages to defeat and dispel him. At this point, Sakon’s spirit appears in front of the injured Ayame and encourages her to go on.

Thanks for both Movies and OVA :)
