This might be a stupid question, but wouldn't "thank goodness" work better than "thank God" as a translation for "yokatta" in this series' case?

I think if Rudeus is saying "thank god," it's fine. Anyone else, and it'd clearly be a mistake. There's an argument to be made that "thank god" is never appropriate in jte translation because of the relative prevalence of monotheism in Japan and the west, but I would reject that.
