I actually don't remember where the subs are from, it's either from **neoHEVC** or **Oyasumi**, what I remember is finding some very nice sets of subtitles but having a ton of problems with it not looking right with my video, even after trying to fiddle with the resolution settings on the ass files, so I dropped it in favor of the one currently in here. I tried getting subtitles from a lot of different places but they all had major problems fitting with my video for some reason, and I don't know how to figure them out so I decided to go with this one. If you find a better set that works with these files, or make a fix for it yourself, please do share it here on the comments. For those asking about the codecs changing, I do confess things got a bit messy over time, as I learned more things and as my vision changed depending of the source. Basically, for DVD sources, I'm preferring HEVC over AV1 for a few reasons. For example, DVD sources are usually grainy, which I do like, but it is hard to preserve said grain with AV1. Also at such low resolutions, AV1 loses some of its efficiency, and HEVC can do a better job at conserving fine detail (which is important here since, again, at such low resolutions, we can't afford to lose a lot). I still want both compression and preserving the source, but I went from leaning more into compression, to leaning more into preservation. This is flexible, I'm open to suggestions about this. I did asked already if people prefer HEVC or AV1 for DVDs, but got no replies on that yet so... About the audio, I've already said on some past encode that I really hate these low bitrate OPUS and AAC, OGG Vorbis as well, though they aren't very common to find on anime encodes. That is the biggest reason I started doing my own encodes, my insatisfaction with the audio. Though I do bite the bullet on DVD sources that have lossy audio (since AC3 isn't all that great either), when the source is lossless, it really hurt to not preserve it better. For DVDs that have lossy audio, I can endure encoding it to OPUS, but if they have lossless audio, I'll either do FLAC or WavPack Hybrid. Different from the video, this is the part I'm immovable about. I'm open to suggestions for most things, but the audio will stay this way. I'm still waiting for comments to see what people prefer for DVD sources by the way, using HEVC for video and FLAC when possible for audio, or going back to AV1 for video and WVH when possible for audio. The explanation of why this is a question in the first place is on the "about the codecs changing" part above.

> crf20 (108 MiB) > FLACebo (117 MiB) your audio is literally bigger than your video

Could be worse, the source is almost 40gb of MPEG2 and LPCM, lol I explained why HEVC+FLAC though, and I asked about it a few encodes ago and got no replies so...
if you're looking for advice you should join a discord server that commonly discusses these sorts of things, like GJM or seadex, and I'm sure there's a whole bunch more. Nyaa comments generally won't be very productive. At a very basic level though, reduce your CRF (especially when doing DVDs) and use lossy audio not lossless (do an ABX test if you think lossless is important). Even trading 100MB of that audio back into the video would be a good start, with no change in overall size

I do confess I'm not into any discord servers related to anime encoding (or anime in general now that I think about it, I barely even use discord), I do this purely out of my own will and shape stuff as I learn more about them, but the audio is very important to me. As I said a few times over my encodes, I really cannot stand the standard "128kbps AAC", or even worse, "96kbps OPUS", it hurts to listen to. The fact I started doing my own encodes and learning stuff like vapoursynth scripting should be good proof. That's why I use WavPack Hybrid on my AV1 releases, it is lossy but better than the previously mentioned stuff. ~~I might start doing WavPack for everything and provide separate, optional correction files for lossless sources...~~ (doesn't work for already muxed files, would distribute the full lossless separately) Edit to clarify: WavPack is lossless, but it has a hybrid mode where it can do lossy (with or without a separate correction file to restore it to it's lossless form)
No one sane uses 96k opus, however something like 192 (or 256 if you're paranoid) is pretty much completely transparent. Or, there's always qAac.

For my own files and tests I do always use QAAC, until FLAC 1.4 came out I had a use for it's ALAC capabilities so I'm pretty familiar with it, but still even AAC from QAAC, not good enough for me. If it's to use 192 or 256kbps, then we are already into WavPack Hybrid territory as the lowest it can do is around 200kbps anyway. I've seen 96kbps OPUS on a few places, it is also fairly common for commentary audio tracks.

I still have the scripts and source files for this, I could redo it as AV1+WVH if it hurts that much But I think I can also leave it as a reminder to not come back to HEVC+FLAC for anime even for DVD or lossless audio sources (my magical mirai encodes will continue like that though as the whole point of them is lossless multichannel audio)
No one's hurt, lossy v lossless is just a hot topic - I’ve seen 96kbps OPUS on a few places, it is also fairly common for commentary audio tracks. I mean sure it's probably fine for commentaries, but for the actual audio? Hell nah. Those places you saw 96k in are probably utterly bitraped encodes where quality is the last focus.
>For DVDs that have lossy audio, I can endure encoding it to OPUS, but if they have lossless audio, I’ll either do FLAC or WavPack Hybrid. lmao

@ts92 would you rather me do Musepack? Or maybe WMA? WMA-Lossless is pretty interesting. Maybe optimumFROG? I've heard USAC has been gaining popularity but it is a prick to playback. What if I do VC1+WMA9, would that be better? Could always go full throttle and do utvideo+LPCM, I'm all ears! If you don't like the formats I use but can't stop laughing to give some useful suggestion, you can always find other encodes, don't even need to leave the site, isn't the internet fascinating?
>For DVDs that have lossy audio, I can endure encoding it to OPUS, but if they have lossless audio, I’ll either do FLAC or WavPack Hybrid. I usually just shitpost here, but with all due respect, please don’t re-encode lossy audio. If you don’t use discord (I don’t either, too many pedos, furries and faggots) you can join #encode on Rizon, but the response may be slow. Or you could join Doom9 and read up on encoding.

I really would rather not reencode AC3 too, but they sometimes are pretty big and aren't much better than the alternatives, it's kind of on a middle ground between being too big for a lossy file but too inefficient to leave as is. When doing AV1 for DVDs, depending of the source I can get it down to smaller sizes than the untouched AC3, would that be fine (doesn't apply on this case since the source is lossless, but a lossy audio track being bigger than the video?)? It is to me but I've already shown I'm willing to spare more space for audio... I do lurk around on IRC chats sometimes, I might find a place to settle and talk so it's better to talk than here
About the video, HEVC for DVDs is nice, also there is not much difference in file size. About the audio, do what you prefer, I will always convert to Opus and redo the mkv XD My goal is to have 100-150 MB max per episodes with an acceptable quality. Opus 128k is crystal clear with my Koss Porta Pro, but I don't have a professional DAC AMP with studio headphones, so FLAC files are a waste of space and Wavepack is esoteric. Having a lossless audio with a very lossy video, it's also weird for me, this is another reason why I prefer Opus. And Opus is the best lossy audio codec for me personally. Anyway, your video encoding is always pretty good, I follow your releases mainly for that ;) For quality preservation, Wavpack is certainly one if not the best Lossless compression codec. Just like JPEG-XL is the best for pictures in its lossless compression mode -d 0. About video... lossless compression unfortunally still does not exist... and doing a JPEG-XL frames sequence is insane XD And I wonder if mpv can reproduce JXL movies hahaha

I don't have professional grade equipment as well, but unfortunately I can pick up on audio issues extremely easy, so much so that my biggest problems isn't even with the sample rate of things, its with the bitrate, low bitrate artifacts pushes my buttons more than anything else, to the point I would rather listen to FM radio than to most audio streaming services. We go so crazy on video resolutions and technologies, but can't spare a few extra megabytes for better audio... The size of 2.0bps wavpack is not so much different than 128kbps opus, plus its not good to reencode already lossy audio, so I would try to keep the WVHs if I were you, but yeah we all have our preferences About the video, I do have a set of arguments I came up with, following suggestions and principally my own tests, I usually run a whole set of tests before encoding something (which is not the best for consistency but oh well). The CRF and CQ values I give are just something easy that people know what it is, to have a reference, but there's a lot more behind the scenes. Thanks for the comment!
so many retarded comments lol... scarletneko did you try SVT-AV1 on DVD(480p) ? something around CRF=12-14 filmgrain=2 preset(speed)=4? pretty good results imho also don't worry about wav=flac who cares about 80mb per episode... it makes no sense to re-encode lossy audio the only instance that i can think of is if you were to reconstruct HF spectrum in something like RX 10 audio editor and then encode it opus@190-256 (unlike AV1 which can fight original blockiness)

I've used SVT-AV1 a few times, and even have an encode shared using it (Dance in the Vampire Bund), but I'm not really a big fan of it for anime, it fares better on real life content. The grain synth on it is amazing though, which is why I used it for that anime, though to this day I'm not really happy with that results, so I usually avoid using it. At these CQ levels the file size will be far too large, I might do something like that someday in the future but for now the intention is to keep sizes fairly small. About the audio, yeah I've decided not to re-encode AC3 anymore and just passthrough them, even if that means a bit larger file size. Although my intention is to have fairly small files, its not to have the smallest of them all, so yep no re-encoded AC3 anymore.
well i used crf 12 on 480p anime with grain synth @ lvl. 2 and final size per episode was hovering about 250 MB... it depends on anime tho... same setting on different could result in double that size.. i have problems with shadow detail retention in av1 so yeah it is not on par at higher bitrates with HEVC
@ScarletNek these subs are actually from an old account of mine, which I originally fixed [here](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/675127#comments). Last time I checked if there were any better subs was roughly 3 years ago ([here](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1251354#com-3)), but still haven't found found better/working ones. Still thanks for this.
