[Source-Encode Comparison](https://slow.pics/c/BNEc9ISc) --- Working on the Urusei Yatsura reboot gave me an itch to revisit this show, as it is somewhat of a favourite of mine. However, I found myself shocked by just how abyssmal all currently available options are. The only existing subs seem to be official subs available in either the tiniest most unreadable PGS variety that I have seen to date, or in the form of a terribly botched OCR attempt of the same script. In either case, both are full of shit timing, shit editing, spelling mistakes, random punctuation mid-sentence that doesn't belong, and the list goes on. And as if that weren't enough, the only existing encodes are utterly starved or strongly denoised. And, while I do think that Kagura did a good job at the latter considering how the source looks, their encode is still full of ghosting (especially in any scene featuring rain) and nukes a lot of textures. It's also not entirely clean, so residual noise is quite distracting. Any other encodes are really so terrible they don't deserve to be mentioned. And just watching the untouched JPBD video did not work for me either, since the chroma noise is so aggressive and intrusive that it just distracts me the entire way through (those of you who feel the same about grain may choose to watch Kagura instead). Also no encodes cropped correctly because nobody knew about shifting, apparently. Now, keeping the grain without totally starving would definitely mean filesizes above 4GB per episode... and I know that you don't want to download 400GB, and that I don't want to seed 400GB to people who won't do the same. As the scan is quite blurry, there is only minimal loss associated with a downscale, so that is what I did. It blurs basically nothing and only removes the finest high frequency grain and some of the ringing, as it essentially serves as a lowpass filter. It allows me to almost halve the bitrate while still producing *acceptable* results—ones that I personally don't mind watching. As far as I am concerned, they are the most watchable version currently existing in motion (the screenshots really do not do the oppressive chroma noise of the source justice). Should someone come forth who would be willing to seed a 1080p version that's almost guaranteed to wind up bigger than 400GB on a fast connection long-term (so, several years), then I may make one such batch towards the end of this project. That said, since the show has been out for decades, as have some existing versions of these subtitles, it seems nobody else but me is ever going to tackle such a huge project. So that's what I am doing. **Releasing two episodes per week, one on Sundays, and another on Wednesdays.** --- PP: crop, downscale, chroma denoise **Staff** Edit: Moelancholy Encode: Moelancholy Timing: Moelancholy Title TS: witchymary Songs: bad official tl (TL), Angrevol (Styling), Moelancholy (Edit) QC: Moelancholy Video: HEVC 958x720 Audio: Opus 192kbps Japanese Subtitles: English Chapters: Yes --- As this is a mostly solo project, I have no doubts there are errors in the source I missed and potentially even more that I introduced. So please report any errors in my [Public QC Discord server](https://discord.gg/YwpJf2fHDe). **I am also looking for additional timers to split the workload with. Even contributing just a few episodes would be appreciated**. No prior fansubbing experience required, so long as you've timed something before. Use mpv for playback.

Infinite thanks for this new project. Finest anime of the 80's in TV format and best romance of all time in my book. Thanks again!
Looks great, thank you!

@peapod I have heard that a lot of times by now. All of the larger cel anime releases I have uploaded are currently seeded by... literally only me. Not me and one other person, just my seedbox and me. If someone really wants a 1080p release of that size, they can take my scripts on github as a blueprint and just run encodes of their own. I'm a student and do not have enough money to afford a seedbox large enough to hold releases that big for years on end. And my home connection is not strong enough to keep a release that big alive while still doing a lot of other uploading for fansubbing. As I said in the description, if there is someone who can guarantee that they can seed such a release on a strong connection for years, if not indefinitely, then I can consider it. Otherwise I will just stick to this trade-off, as it is the lowest I can push the filesize while still producing acceptable results. On another note, this episode already has almost as many downloads after one day as my Kimagure Orange Road torrent, which is only 170GB, has after one year of being on the site. Proof's in the pudding.

Proof’s in the pudding. I just looked at that torrent. The reason I would not download it is not the filesize but the subtitles.

@Slysoft That's cool and all, but they are the best available subtitles and hadn't yet been OCRd. All previous releases that user .srt or .ass subs had a singificantly worse version, the older official script. And it's clearly not the actual issue at hand, since the comically awful Judas release with the same subs is still seeded. Anyway, bottom line is either someone steps up who will actually seed a bigger torrent on a strong connection, or I will only upload these 720p encodes. In either case, it's an improvement over all currently existing versions, and the main benefit of a 1080p release would really just be keeping the finer grain and less blurring in extreme reds.
It's a lot harder to achieve a download for a big batch than a single episode.
As Maison Ikkoku is my favorite series ever, I give you my thanks for this project.
divide it in multiple parts just like Aot, clearly that's the only solution
the reason i dont think i agree with your rhetoric of doing 720p here is your choice of project. the numbers are already low choosing this, and the only real reason people would be dling this release with the intention of watching this release is because of the quality of the release- 95% of people watching this old anime are just gonna take whatever is easily available to them. as such i dont think thered be much of a difference between a 1080p and 720p torrents numbers. those who do care will archive the episodes, so when it comes to a batch the users who can seed already or have intention to seed will be basically the same. also i wouldnt worry too much about nyaa numbers, we all know long term sharing happens only on private trackers, private file servers, etc

You can make up random numbers all you want, it's not going to change anything. I'm not releasing 1080p encodes that are likely to be over 4GB per episode to then be the only one who seeds them, making my upload speed unusable for anything else fansubbing related for years on end. I care about keeping my releases alive on public trackers, so anyone who cares about getting a quality release can get it. If you think people will keep things alive on private trackers, then those people should DM me and help me actually realise a potential 1080p release by providing help with long-term distro... which would be no different to keeping the release alive on private trackers. If 1080p releases are so important to you, you can just provide the hdd space and internet connection and make it happen. Or use my scripts on Github and make your own.
Thanks, will seed!
2.3GB?! Total and complete overkill! The 1080p release is 1.7GB to 1.8GB on averange. The full release is 161GB
did you consider that 1.7GB at 1080p actually looks like garbage for such a grainy show

@Gradius The comparisons to those release are literally right there at the very top of the description. Every other release looks awful. People like you are why I lost motivation do do stuff like this. Like, seriously.
