It uses a new restoration and far surpasses the WEB-DL and US DVD (and JP DVD, I imagine) in picture quality. And to an even greater extent than with Totoro, the file size is on the smaller side due to this movie's short 78-minute runtime. I'm sure all Miyazaki fans will be glad to know that on top of coming up with the idea for this movie, he also did key animation for [some](https://twitter.com/randomsakuga/status/1757358962410950896) [scenes.](https://twitter.com/randomsakuga/status/1686859421291511810) ### Audio **Japanese Mono** * **2002 JP DVD**: The best one of these. Much higher overall fidelity than the BD, with no extreme noise management like on the US DVD. Possibly a magnetic track. (384 kbps) * **2005 US DVD**: Similar to the 2002 JP DVD but has lots of noise reduction (up to 7-8 dB) starting at ~2 kHz, so sounds quite muffled. (192 kbps) * **Amazon WEB-DL**: Similar to the 2002 JP DVD but has less energy along 1.5 kHz - 7 kHz and thus sounds drier. (224 kbps) * **2023 US BD**: An optical track or at least sourced from some much higher generation copy than what the WEB-DL and DVD tracks were sourced from, which would explain the lower quality. If not, then this seems to have noise reduction from 7 kHz upwards, a lower mids/bass boost along 700 Hz - 120 Hz, and a drop after around 100 Hz compared to the JP DVD. Either way, this sounds muffled, more distorted, maybe a bit boomy, and also kind of crunched due to the less dynamic waveform. Overall, noticeably less detailed than the other releases. Comparison video to demonstrate the audio quality differences: [![](https://i.imgur.com/g35JqVD.png)](https://vimeo.com/859111525) Syncing the JP DVD track to Discotek's release was surprisingly laborious. It probably required more work than any other track I've had to sync thus far, even though it's only 78 minutes long. I'm guessing the fact that the BD track is optical has something to do with it constantly desyncing from the (possibly) magnetic DVD version. Fortunately, the BD track was still usable as a reference as it seemed to keep in sync with the BD video well enough all the way through. As to the English dub, it's in even worse condition than the BD's Japanese track due to apparently having no decent master from which a good-sounding version could be sourced. In spite of Discotek's attempt to [enhance it](https://twitter.com/discotekmedia/status/1684638357027184642) using EQ, it still sounds quite rough. There's not a lot you can really do about it, unfortunately. The EQ tweaks ([mainly a general bass decrease and a 3-10 dB boost along 2 kHz - 6 kHz](https://slow.pics/c/BLLmqlwf)) and pop-removal Discotek performed most noticeably made the track sound brighter and a bit easier on the ears pop-wise than the non-tweaked(?) US DVD version. I reckon most people will prefer the EQ'd version, but I'll leave a [DDL](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n99PaDwxajldUHEgePqYKhnsMO0LQWgM/view?usp=drive_link) here for the unsynced DVD track to let you judge for yourself with these if you wish to do so. Credit to JTaylorPro for also ripping the isolated music track from the JP DVD. Interestingly, it sounds better than the full mix on the DVD. While it's difficult to know the reason for sure, it could be thanks to the isolated track's master being in better shape when the track was created from it. That said, the full mix doesn't sound outright bad or anything in comparison. They're pretty neck and neck for the most part, with the full mix sounding somewhat more anemic at times and rougher around the edges during louder segments in the songs. Not a huge deal by any means, but still a curious difference. I guess one takeaway from this is that it's a bit of a pity there's probably not as clean a version of the full mix out there, though I have yet to see how the two JP LaserDiscs fare. However, it could be that there simply does not exist such a clean master for the main mix, and the JP DVD/possibly LDs already used the same best possible version. ### Subtitles The old US DVD script was revised for the BD, so I took the BD subs, fully retimed them, did the usual typesetting for the signs and songs, and fixed a couple of errors. Around 30 lines that hadn't been translated were also translated with help from el doge and butler. Most of these were more minor stuff, while a few were full proper lines. I wouldn't be surprised if some were missed/left untranslated during the BD TL revisions merely because the translator had difficulty hearing the lines clearly (assuming they didn't have access to the Japanese script/subtitles and were solely working off of the poor BD audio, which might be the case as it apparently can be extremely difficult to obtain such materials for a Toei title). Also, for some reason, none of the four instances of characters calling the [walrus pirate Otto](https://i.imgur.com/DINYSPs.png) by his name in the audio had been included in the BD or DVD subtitles. His name is easy to mix up, but I think I was able to discern when they were actually using it. Let me know if you think I got it wrong somewhere and I'll see about a fix. ### Comparisons [**Japanese 1.0**](https://slow.pics/c/57FLNLn3) | [**English 1.0**](https://slow.pics/c/BLLmqlwf) | [**Video**](https://slow.pics/c/NIbPUaJm) [Additional screenshots of the Isolated Music 1.0 track.](https://slow.pics/c/V0zcgCza) ### Specifics Video: 1. 2023 US BD Remux (1920x1080, 23.976 fps) Audio: 1.
