Welcome back, this time to the Perrine movie. This movie was actually produced in 1980, with plans to capitalize on the popularity of the World Masterpiece Theater and its antecedents at the time, particularly Heidi's movies in 1979. Unfortunately for Nippon, the Marco movie (also simply a recut of TV show footage) that was made beforehand was a commercial failure, and they ended up shelving this movie for another 10 years before giving it a theatrical release to coincide with an LD release of the TV show. The audio was entirely re-recorded, and besides new narration, a few lines and minor plot points were changed around. Marcel, a rather important character in the first half of the show, is entirely written out for example. Generally, the movie is primarily concerned with the second half of the show, where the meat of the novel is. No major changes to the animation were made as far as I can tell, though it was cropped more generously, leading to some black bars and floating objects at the bottom of the screen at times. For me, this meant retiming our existing dialogue to the movie, then editing it to match the changed lines, or doing entirely new TL. not terribly labor-intensive, but annoying at times, particularly since the audio quality is somehow worse than in the TV show, and not even the separately captured analog audio track is much clearer. Still, I persevered, and Dildo caught a few smaller changes I had missed. I'm personally not a big fan of this movie. It has to heavily cut down on characterization to get most of the important plot points into its runtime, and doesn't feel much like a movie and more like a sparknotes version. Business as usual with these kinds of compilations I guess. And there you have it, the 1990 Perrine movie release, and another Orphan-raw rescued. Next up is the Perrine Kanketsu Ban, which should be a bit easier to put together.
