In preparation for potentially editing S4 of the Re:Zero anime, I started reading the official English translations of the LNs. Starting in Volume 2, I began to notice serious problems in the translation. The translation team seemingly did not care enough about the source material to notice when dialogue exchanges made no sense at all and thus warranted some closer examination and revision on their part. Although much has already been written about the translation problems of the official LNs, those complaints are frankly short-selling the extent of the problem. It reminded me of Yen Press's unfortunate In the Land of Leadale translation. (For the record, Yen Press usually does a good job.) After reading volumes 1-9 in English, I started reading the Japanese text and making corrections to the official English TL where I thought there was an objective TL error. After finishing my edits for the first part of Volume 10, I watched the associated anime episode and observed that several of my changes matched what was happening on-screen better than the original. That gave me enough confidence to decide to start making translation corrections to the full series. This is the first volume in that project. As an example of a translation that the officials got wrong and that machine translation would not be able to fix, the dialogue line `「安全地帯からものすごーく、えらっそうね」` in volume 1, in which a character chides Subaru for taunting Elsa despite not being involved in the fight, is attributed to Elsa in the official translation. But that `すごーく` is essentially Emilia's catchphrase as of volume 1, so an attentive translator would know that she is the one speaking without needing to rely on context or guesswork. As for my qualifications, I am N2, which would certainly not be proficient enough to do a better job than the official translator if I were translating from scratch, but as mentioned, I already cross-referenced my fixes against four episodes of the anime and confirmed that they are not doing more harm than good (to say the least). In addition to objective translation corrections (as opposed to translations that I disagree with but can see the rationale for), I'm making consistency corrections when I happen to spot them ("protection" --> "blessing" and "Master Swordsman" --> "Sword Saint" in order to match future volumes), converting units to metric and names to phonetic order, and fixing typos.
